You have to be fairly careful though. There are a lot of people importing cheap cell phones from Asia. Whilst some of these are excellent quality phones, there are others that don’t work or only last a little while. The key is finding a reputable importer with a reputation for good customer service and quality products.
Another option to consider is purchasing a refurbished cell phone. With the current emphasis on recycling and cost cutting a lot of people are selling their old phones for cash. Often, the companies that buy these phones, clean and repair them and then resell them for a profit. A lot of phones sold on Ebay are refurbished models. You are not going to be able to have the latest model or features but if you are looking for a phone that just makes calls, this could be the answer.
A lot of people damage their cell phones. I spilt baby formula all over mine and although it worked for a couple of days, it eventually gave up. I was tied into my mobile phone contract for another six months so I didn’t want to buy an expensive phone. I tried a couple of shops but new phones all came with either a contract or other condition attached.
So I looked into buying a second hand phone. I found out that a lot of mobile phones are returned shortly after purchase. Obviously some of them are returned as they don’t work but some people just don’t like the look of the phone. By law, the mobile phone providers cannot sell these returned phones as new so they often re-sell them to used phone providers. So it is possible to buy a second hand phone that is still in the warranty period. But these deals are rare and most used cell phone providers don’t keep very good records. As with every product you would buy, if it looks too good to be true then there is probably something wrong.
There are other ways of reducing the cost of purchasing a new phone. You could take advantage of a combination deal offered by one of the mobile phone plan providers. In order to use a cell phone you must be connected to a network on either a prepaid basis or a contract basis. As mobile phone plan providers are always trying to increase their share of this lucrative market, they will often offer a “free” phone as part of a package.
Often these offers work out to be a great deal particularly if you are going to use the cellular phone a lot. Be sure to read the small print in the contract and compare it to other available offers to see which is best for you. You can find cheap cellular phones – you just need to know where to look!
